An iOS 8.3 – 8.4 jailbreak for iPhones, iPads and iPods could be on the horizon, a new report indicates. On Friday, Tools4Hack blog reported that the Pangu jailbreak team had demoed a working iOS 8.3 jailbreak at MOSEC, a security conference sponsored by the team.
A post by one of Pangu’s team member’s – Daniel_4K – on Weibo seems to corroborate the news.
The post on Tools4Hack is in Japanese so the Google translation is not great, but the report seems to indicate the jailbreak will be released once iOS 8.4 is dropped by Apple. This could be as early as Monday, as some rumors have held that Apple will release both iOS 8.4 and the iOS 9 beta right after the WWDC keynote event.
Here is the piece of the text, translated by Bing that seems to indicate the impending release:
“Speaking Pangu team got released and jailbreak tool type, so when released iOS 8.4 depending on developments in the coming days to jailbreak you can! On the 8th (Japan time 9, 2:00) if is the official release date for iOS 8.4 understood should be, so for the time being to wait it out. It is.”
Of course I can’t say definitively that this means an iOS 8.3/8.4 jailbreak is coming Monday (or anytime for that matter), because this interpretation is not at all clear. I am currently searching someone who could give a better translation of this. Once I have, I’ll update this post. I will say this though: a few weeks ago I reported that a team had achieved an iOS 8.3 jailbreak but was holding off on the release. Though I wasn’t allowed to say which team it was at the time, it was in fact Pangu. This demo at MOSEC confirms what I already knew and could point to an impending release.
I did find the timing of this news humorous as I had just finished publishing an article an hour before, which stated that another Chinese jailbreak team, TaiG, had no current plans to release a jailbreak before iOS 9. Of course Pangu did something similar to this last fall. Hours after I had published a report stating that an unknown team had achieved kernel execution, Pangu released the iOS 8 jailbreak. It seems they like to hold stuff close to the chest and deliver surprises. Kinda keeps things fun, huh? I guess you never can tell what will happen, but this news about Pangu definitely seems promising. Keep your eyes open, and as always, if something new pops up, I’ll be sure to update!
UPDATE: 12:00 am 06/06/15
A reader on Twitter, @chanix, who also runs the tech blog, superphen.co, was kind enough to take a look at the text on Tools4Hacks for me. In translating it, he determined that the report of the iOS 8.3 demo was true, but the alleged release of a jailbreak when iOS 8.4 drops is just speculation on the part of the blogger.
According to @chanix, “There is no word on the release date from any of the Weibo accounts of Pangu team members, so I think there is nothing to counterprove…”
It’s easy to imagine a blogger might become excited about an impending release after seeing the demo, but at this time, there isn’t any solid evidence that a release is in Pangu’s plans.
